DIGITAL WELL-BEING OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS
The holidays can often be one of the most difficult times to balance our children's time on devices. We've added what we think is a great article to the Digital Wellbeing page of our Digital Learning website. Although it talks of the 2022 - 23 academic year, its points are perhaps timeless looking at:
- Concerns about excessive screen time among children resurface as the School year ends
- The “power of three” to categorise technology use into social, physical/active, and creative/educational activities
- Setting time limits for each category and including “digital sabbaticals” promote a balanced approach to technology during the summer break
Finally, please keep your eye on the Digital Learning website which will be updated throughout the holidays with the latest information on Bring Your Own Device, starting in August.
Thank you so much for your support in advance, I hope you can make it some great holidays, and don't forget our holiday coding camps to make that screen time purposeful!

RST SENIOR 2018 - 2023
As we approach the end of yet another year, we find ourselves at a significant juncture for RST. Reflecting upon the past five years since RST Senior School first welcomed students, we have two compelling photographs that encapsulate the journey.
The initial snapshot captures the inaugural boys' day House gathering in 2018, marking the commencement of RST Senior School. Fast forward five years and the second image portrays the F Block, now transformed into accomplished Rugbeians, assembled on the Veraphan Theatre stage. This momentous occasion serves as a testament to their growth and development throughout their time at RST.
SENIOR PRODUCTION ANNOUNCEMENT: BLOOD BROTHERS
Rights have been obtained for our next School year’s Senior Musical Production of ‘Blood Brothers’; a tragic comedy musical by Willy Russell. It tells the story of the Johnston twin boys (Mickey and Edward) who are separated at birth and brought up in completely different environments in the city: one rich and one poor. It has both tragedy and comedy, with fabulous songs and is known for ‘bringing the audience to its feet with roaring approval’. It has won many major awards.
The show will feature a full pit band and be performed in the Black Box Theatre. Students interested in auditioning can access the production's website and Google Classroom using the code wlg4rby. Auditions will take place on Monday, 28th and Tuesday, 29th August and are open to all Senior Students; Scholars and Examination Students are particularly encouraged to join.
Performances are scheduled from the 28th November to 1st December.
For more information, please see Mr Furness (Drama) and Mrs Duncan (Music).

The Rugby Ball
The Hilton Hotel Pattaya was the glamorous, beachside setting for an unforgettable evening, as Rugby School Thailand (RST) hosted the Rugby Ball 2023. Themed "A Starry Night," the celebration brought together Sixth Form students, staff, and special guests, who rose to the challenge: Dress to impress!
The organising team of Sixth Form students went above and beyond to ensure a magical atmosphere, which included a series of amusing predictions under the categories of "Most likely to...." Guests voted throughout the evening and eagerly awaited the announcement of the winners for "Prom King," "Prom Queen," "Prom Prince," and "Prom Princess." MCs for the night were our newly appointed Heads of School, Nicki and Ronnie, who did an outstanding job!
As XX students embark on their new academic endeavours, they will forever be cherished as Old Rugbeins.
Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards
The Silver Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) group, filled with a sense of accomplishment and pride, beamed with joy at the culmination of their practice expedition. After enduring challenges and pushing their limits, they emerged victorious, having overcome various obstacles along the way. The smiles on their faces are a testament to the bonds they had formed as a team and the personal growth they had experienced during their journey.
E Block Geography Trip
Day 1:
We journeyed from RST to Khao Chamao, accessing a small river in the national park. Despite the dry spell, we explored the river's characteristics, trekking to different sites. Upstream, we discovered beautiful pools perfect for a refreshing swim. Students learned fieldwork techniques, measuring the river's width, depth, and velocity. They also practised unbiased sampling and measuring stream bedload. In the evening, at Burapha University, they used their data to calculate cross-sectional area and discharge, reducing errors by combining multiple data sets.
Day 2:
Coastal Day at Kung Krabaen presented two contrasting beaches approached from different directions. One group explored along the shore while the other climbed over a rocky headland. We witnessed erosional processes firsthand as waves crashed onto the headland. Different beach shapes resulting from wave action were observed, and students measured beach profiles and observed beach material and sorting levels. We also examined various coastal protection methods, considering the area's transition from fishing to shrimp farming and tourism. Measurement of longshore drift on a newly created beach was conducted. Additionally, we visited a mangrove restoration scheme, highlighting the threat to this vital coastal environment.
Day 3:
The day began with a visit to an aquarium and a fish sanctuary, followed by an exciting trip to Khao Wong caves. This unique Karst landscape showcased the impact of weathering. Students had the opportunity to venture through the caves on an adventurous hike, gaining valuable firsthand experience.
LXX Kickstart Programme
As part of the RST University Kickstart Programme, LXX students attended valuable sessions to prepare for higher education. Guest speakers from renowned institutions provided information on study opportunities in the UK, Australia, the US, and Canada; students interested in studying in Thailand received personalised guidance.
The programme emphasised finding the right university fit for social and academic needs. Practical sessions covered topics like laundry, budgeting, networking, and a Master Chef challenge. The UWE Bristol team conducted sessions on academic referencing, research techniques, and crafting successful CVs.
A highlight of the programme was the RST Alumni Panel, where students had the unique opportunity to interact with alumni who shared their experiences of university applications and navigating university life.
The University Kickstart Programme has equipped our students with the necessary tools for the university application process and their higher education journeys. By combining academic development, practical life skills, and real-world exposure, we are nurturing well-rounded individuals ready to tackle the challenges of university and beyond.
Thank you to the speakers, RST staff, and LXX students for contributing to the programme's success.
Learning
PSYCHOLOGY
Last week, LXX Psychology students were busy conducting research and investigated 'helping behaviour' at RST. They put their research methods knowledge and skills to practise and will now be analysing their results to see whether or not their hypotheses can be accepted or rejected.
LXX Psychology students have been learning about the reliability and validity of the research methods psychologists use. The students demonstrated this by working in pairs to build a lego model for their partners to replicate....with varying degrees of success! This lesson demonstrated the importance of clear instructions and replicability.
DRAMA
IGCSE Drama students have been developing their characters for their scripted performance coursework. They made 'shrines' to their characters, choosing a range of objects which they feel represent them and then presented these to their peers.

Year 4 Show: Alice the Musical
Year 4 RST students wowed audiences last week with their sensational musical production, 'Alice the Musical'. The stage came alive with vibrant costumes and captivating set designs, transporting us into a whimsical Wonderland.
With infectious energy, the young performers brought beloved characters like Alice, the Mad Hatter, and the Caterpillar to life. Their voices resonated, leaving enchanting melodies lingering in our hearts.
The dedication and hard work of Year 4 students were evident in every moment. Two casts showcased their fantastic abilities, delivering powerful performances. Each student had a chance to shine through acting, solo singing, and dancing, creating a dynamic and captivating show.
RST students were fully engaged, contributing to every aspect of the production, from tech support to backdrop design and eye-catching posters. Every detail was carefully crafted, making the experience truly individualised and memorable.
Though the journey through Wonderland has ended, the impact of 'Alice the Musical' will endure as a testament to the incredible talent and limitless potential within Year 4.
Year 7 Microbit Gaming Device
This year, the students in Year 7 had a really cool project in their design and technology and computing classes. They got to be game designers! They came up with ideas for their own games, designed the look and feel of the handheld controllers, and even programmed the games themselves.
It wasn't just about being creative, though. They also had to solve problems and learn about things like design, making stuff, and programming. They did a great job of thinking up new ideas and making changes to their designs as they went along.
The best part was seeing them actually try out their games this week. They worked hard and it was awesome to see their progress. They should be proud of themselves for what they accomplished as game designers.
Mini Business Expo
Earlier this week, the Prep Entrance was abuzz with youthful energy and entrepreneurial spirit as Kidpreneurs hosted a resounding success in their Mini Business Expo. These young visionaries astounded attendees with their business plans, captivating marketing posters, and the display of their remarkable entrepreneurial skills, including persuasive sales talk. The event was not just about commerce; it was a platform for creativity and growth. Inspiring everyone with their innovative ideas, the Kidpreneurs raised a remarkable total of 11,631THB for the Childline Thailand Foundation, showcasing their commitment to making a positive impact on society.
Trashion Show
To reuse all the old artwork and the spare papers in the art room, we decided to hold an end-of-year Trashion Show. In only an hour, students collaborated to make outfits fit for the catwalk. Super teamwork and creativity shone through in the session and the students paraded around our House assembly with pride.
Simply marvellous recycling!
Music Celebration
The Prep School's music celebration was a resounding success, filled with vibrant melodies and harmonious performances from talented students. The Veeraphan reverberated with joyous notes, as the celebration showcased the School's dedication to nurturing musical talents.
Maths and English Leadership
Our Maths and English Leadership award has also been completed this term, with our Leaders running planned prep sessions for Year 3. This has proved to be an eye-opening experience for those 32 Year 7 and Year 8 students having to think on their feet, problem solve, be highly organised and then deliver their sessions! The feedback from both staff and students has been very positive and students received their certificates during the final House Assembly yesterday. Well done to those involved and a special thank you to Mrs Johnson for helping to plan and organise the award.

What can I do with my child during the holidays?
The long summer holiday is here again. This means our wonderful children will be home for seven weeks. We know how stressful it can be to manage children, keep them busy, entertain them and ensure they are still learning during the holidays. So, we have decided to share 20 ways to keep your child occupied during the holidays.
INDOOR ACTIVITIES
Play Board Games, do some colouring, read - by themselves or together with you -, helping with cleaning or tidying around the house, helping to cook or bake in the kitchen.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Go for a bike ride, join a summer camp, learn a new activity, go to the beach, go to the cinema, and have a picnic.
It's not easy keeping your children occupied for such a long time but just a few points to remember:
- It is ok for your children to be bored. They do not need to be entertained every minute of every day. Being bored allows their creativity to flourish.
- Hard work never hurt anyone and it is fine for your child to be expected to help around the house - making their bed, tidying their room, washing the dishes, sweeping the floor. All valuable life skills.
- Enjoy the time you have with your children during this holiday. Spelling and maths can wait until we get back to School.
Whatever you do and wherever you go, have a wonderful holiday and we look forward to seeing you again next term.
End of Year Messages
PRE-NURSERY
What a wonderful School year we have had this year; it has been so lovely having the little ones in School for the whole academic year, full of smiles and chatter! The Fish, Rabbit and Panda Classes have learnt so many new things since starting School; how to say goodbye to our families each morning, how to play with our friends, as well as learning to be more independent and do many things for ourselves. Wishing all the Pre-Nursery families and friends a safe and happy summer.
NURSERY
What a wonderful year we have had in Nursery. The Parrots, Bears and Owls have grown and blossomed into amazing young people. They are excited, engaged learners who love to communicate, collaborate and explore the world around them. It has been our pleasure to be their teachers and we wish them all the best as they move forward into Reception.
RECEPTION
What a fabulous year we've had in Reception with lots of learning through play and growing up too. The kids are all super excited for next year in Year 1 and the teachers will miss you all dearly. Good luck and please come back to visit!
YEAR 1
As we have reached the end of the year, we want to say how proud we are of all that your children have achieved. They’ve grown so much, both academically and personally. Your enthusiasm and dedication to supporting us and your children have been very much appreciated. Continue encouraging your children to follow their dreams, embrace challenges, and believe in themselves. Thank you for an amazing year, and we can't wait to see what they achieve in the future.
Have a wonderful summer break!
YEAR 2
We have come to the end of another amazing year here in Year 2. First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to the parents of our year 2 children for their amazing support and enthusiasm with everything we have done throughout the year. We really couldn't do it without you!
Secondly, I would like to say a massive thank you to our teachers and TAs here in Year 2. They really are amazing people who always go the extra mile to help, take care of and teach our children. In addition, another massive thank you to our SMT who are always there for us, encourage us to try new things and support us wherever necessary.
Finally, and most importantly, a great big final THANK YOU to all of your wonderful children in Year 2. They have made it such an enjoyable year and we are going to miss them so much! We wish them all the luck in the world for next year in Year 3 and for their future studies.
To the Year 2 children........think big, dream big and remember YOU CAN BE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE! Always have a go and never give up on your dreams!
Year 2 Show
Our Year 2 Leavers' Assembly was a great way for our children to say thank you and goodbye to Pre-prep.
The children sang amazingly well and put on a tremendous performance. We are sad to see them go, and we have so many amazing memories with them. We wish them all the best for their future studies.
Makaton Signing
For our final Signs of the Week this year, we learned the signs for:
'Colours', 'Rainbow', 'Sing'
A huge thank you to our Pre-Nursery Rabbit class for their help in making the video.
You might also like to sing the song: ‘I can Sing a Rainbow’ together with your child.
Thank you for learning to sign with us at School this year.
Happy holidays and happy signing!

Boarding Life
On Wednesday, our amazing Houseparents and Matrons organised the annual End of Year Boarding Party. It was a fitting send-off for our 2023 leavers and a great night was had by all. From a delicious barbecue where the Heads of House each made a speech thanking staff, the party moved to the black box where a neon-themed disco provided hours of fun and dancing for everyone lucky enough to be there. It's been another great year for boarding in Rupert Brooke and School House, primarily thanks to Mrs Windsor and Miss Passmore who give so much of their time to make sure our boarders are so well looked after. Well done RST boarders!
What a lovely last weekend our full boarders had at Marshall House for the academic year. We can’t be any prouder of the great friendships built over the past year and the exemplary behaviour displayed by Atom, Zulin, Ayla, Kaimook and Rei every single weekend!
The weekend started with a lovely barbecue and some delicious baking of chocolate brownies at Marshall House on Friday evening. Saturday afternoon was a stroll around Thepprasit Market and indulging in some fruit shakes and snacks.
This was followed by a lovely evening dining on the beach at Bacco reflecting on how quickly and how amazing everyone’s years have been at RST.
It seemed fitting that Sunday ended with a foot massage after an incredibly busy and rewarding year of full boarding.
From all the staff at Marshall House, we wish all of our boarders a wonderful holiday!
A relaxing and typical weekend in Rupert Brooke - watching a movie, eating pizza and baking cookies. Perfect!
As we bid farewell to the XX this week, we also say goodbye to Mr Kelly, a much-loved Tutor in School House. We would like to thank him for the care and support he has shown the boys. This photo shows him with his tutor group at a recent meal out. Thank you, Mr Kelly!
LXX boarders in Rupert Brooke and School House were treated to a delicious pizza at sunset last week.

PREP ADVENTURE EXPLORE SURVIVE (AES)
Last week, our Adventure Explore Survive (AES) students embarked on their mini-adventure through the forests of Khao Mai Kaeo. The mini-adventure marks the culmination of their AES Activity where they put together all their new skills in a self-supported mini-expedition through the forest trails of Khao Mai Kaeo.
Working in teams of 4 or 5, they have to carry all their own supplies and with a map and compass navigate their way around the forest trails. Each group has a teacher with them, but the students lead the way.
Along the way, they stop off to take in the views and investigate interesting insects, plants, birds and the amazing jungle that we are very fortunate to have right on our doorstep.
The highlight of the mini-adventure is the Camp. They have to find it first, then build a shelter, set up their equipment, light a fire and cook themselves lunch.
We provide a selection of ingredients and the students become the chefs, producing some wonderfully interesting meals!
During the mini-adventure the students come together and showcase their teamwork, versatility and resilience, all key Learner Profile characteristics. The new experiences ignite a sense of adventure and exploration in them and the sense of achievement afterwards is extremely rewarding. Like them, we can't wait to do it all again next year.

PREP DANCE OUT LOUD ACTIVITY
The final day of Dance Out Loud Activity was a whirlwind of games and laughter, with musical chairs, switch partners, and the spotlight stealing the show. The children beamed with joy, their confidence evident in every step. As the term unfolded, they forged unforgettable memories and formed strong bonds with their newfound friends, marking the end of a transformative journey filled with growth and happiness. Dance Out Loud provided them with more than just dance moves; it empowered them to embrace their unique talents, express themselves boldly, and believe in their own abilities.
SENIOR RUNNING CLUB
Every week, Mr Duncan and Mr Fellows take a group of students trail running through the hills surrounding the School. They do exceptionally well and have benefitted from taking part and building a community of runners.
Sport
RUGBY
Last Thursday was an exciting day for RST Rugby when we had end-of-year rugby matches against each other to finish the year strong!
- the Y4(U9) team took on the Y5(U10) team; the Y4s did exceptionally well against the Y5s, both teams playing outstanding rugby, displaying excellent sportsmanship, with a high level of positivity on both sides;
- the Y6(U11) team faced the Y7(U12); this was a tough match because both teams are equally skilled, so it was an exciting match to watch. Both teams displayed high-quality rugby, including strong team spirit and a positive attitude overall;
- the Y8(U13) team faced the Y9(U14) team; the U13s started the game really strongly and displayed some excellent skills, but the U14 came back in the second half and displayed good skills and resilience. All of the rugby coaches are extremely pleased about the quality of rugby we saw last Thursday and are looking forward to next year.
We would like to thank Mr Mann who will be leaving RST Rugby this year as he played a big role in the development of rugby at RST. We will miss him very much!
